Bernheim-Jeune was a famous gallery in Paris, run by a family of art dealers from Besançon, a town in eastern France on the border with Switzerland, who have been selling painting materials and frames since the end of the 18th century. Descendant of Joseph Bernheim (1799-1859), son of Alexandre Bernheim (1839-1915), friend of Delacroix, Corot and Gustave Courbet, settled in Paris in 1863, on Rue Lafitte no. 8, on the advice of the fellow citizen of Besançon, G. Courbet. This is where Alexandre Bernheim introduced the Impressionists to the public in 1874. Moved in 1906 to Boulevard de la Madeleine no. 25 corner with Rue Richepanse no. 15, the Bernheim Gallery knows the true development under the close supervision of the sons of Alexandre Bernheim, Josse Bernheim-Jeune (1870-1941) and Gaston Bernheim-Jeune (1870-1953). Later, Bernheim-Jeune is the first gallery to open on Avenue Matignon, on the corner with Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The new location was inaugurated by Gaston Doumergue, President of France, on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition: "Masterpieces of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries."

Bernheim-Jeune had contracts with many artists: P. Bonnard (1904-1940), Chagall (1928), H.E. Cross (1906-1910), Raoul Dufy (1920-1929), Edouard Goerg (1926-1927), Grommaire (1930-1931), A. Maillol (1937), A. Marquet (1916-1931), Henri Matisse (1909-1926), J. Pascin (1928-1930), P. Signac (1907-1930), Maurice Utrillo (1927-1929), Kees Van Dongen (1909-1916), Maurice de Vlaminck (1920-1932), Dimitrie Berea (1948-1960).
